There are plenty of scenic drives in the area. These are just a few:
Drive back to Creeslough and turn left at the end of the main street to Carrigart. On the way you will pass Doe Castle. Head on towards Carrigart and then turn left at the church for Downings and you will see signs for the Atlantic Drive, which is a very scenic route. We like to stop by the Singing Pub for lunch, but there is generally live music only at night. The cost for a cab to take you there (to avoid drinking and driving as you will want to sing) is 25 and 50 for a round trip.
Drive through Dunfanaghy and head for Falcarragh, where there is a beautiful beach, then head on towards Gortahork and go round Bloody Foreland, where there are great views of Tory Island and wonderful stone walls.
Drive towards Falcarragh but just after Kanes Studio (on the left, stop in for a cup of coffee, slice of cake and pottery) turn left and go through Muckish Gap – a nice drive through the mountains and if you want you can always climb Muckish Mountain. The tradition is to bring a pebble/rock from the bottom and add it to the pile on top of the mountain.
Drive back to Creeslough and just before Kilmacrennan you will see signs for Glenveagh National Park. Here there are many trails and gardens to explore. Also Glebe House and Gallery is quite a famous art gallery. If you continue on this road it will take you past Errigal, the highest mountain in Donegal, and the Poisoned Glen, where you will eventually arrive back at Gweedore and the N56 back to Dunfanaghy.
For an all day outing you can take a boat to Tory Island either from Gortahork or Bunbeg and sometimes Port na Blagh pier. Most of the islanders only speak Gaelic and they have an actual King of Tory. The Tory Island painters are quite famous.
Walks by Car
Drive through Dunfanaghy and at the fork in the road at the end of town, turn right out the Horn Head Road, continue straight up the hill at the fork in the road and continue round Horn Head, stopping to admire the fabulous views. Imagine the race cars rallys that used to drive on this road, without the side barriers! When you come to the T junction turn right and head up the hill towards the small fort. Park the car and you can walk up to the fort and if you have the energy you can walk right out to the Horns, but be warned it is longer than you think, and be careful of the strong winds. When you come back continue straight down the hill and continue the circular road back to the fork in the road.
Again drive out the Horn Head Road but park your car just after the bridge. There is a map of the walk by the entrance: Walk over the stile and follow the path over many sand dunes to Tramore Beach. It’s like a secret paradise. This is a fun place to take a picnic to. It takes about 1/2 hr to walk to the beach if you don’t play in the dunes for too long! There is a further walk called Gun Loop that goes around the foreland with fantastic views.
Head back towards Creeslough and you will see a sign on the left for the Ards Friary. Park in the parking lot and walk to the beach and then follow the path to the left and you will find a number of small beaches and a walk over the headland to a large beach.
Head back towards Creeslough and just after Ballymore Church you will see Ards Forest Park, depending on the time of year you may have to pay to drive in, but once in there are some great trails and picnic areas.
Walks from the House
Take a left out of the driveway to get to Killyhoey Beach. The entrance is the same as the golf club, just keep walking down the road through the golf course, careful of the golfers and flying golf balls. It is about 10 min walk to the beach. By turning left along the beach and following the dunes of the golf course, you can walk to the village and arrive opposite Arnolds Hotel. If it is windy you will always find a sheltered spot in the sand dunes to relax.
Take a right out of the driveway and walk towards Port na Blagh. Just after the Green Door Gallery turn left where there is a sign for the Shandon Hotel and walk the scenic route to Marble Hill Strand. If you continue on this road it will bring you back to the main N56 – take a right to return. The walk itself takes just over 1 1/2hr…if you don’t spend any time on the beach.
Walk back towards Port na Blagh and just after the Green Door Gallery turn right and walk by Sessiagh Lake. It will take you back to the main road by Sandhill. This is about 30 min
Turn right at the bottom of the drive and take the first road on the right. This is the Graveyard Road and takes you past an old church and graveyard, where people who died in the Famine are buried. At the end of the road you can turn right and it brings you to the centre of the village, about 30 min walk. Or you can turn left and continue up the road and just continue on until you come to the Creggan Mill and the N56 and you turn right back to Dunfanaghy. This is about 1 1/2 hrs.
